In 1966, General Bahrami, the head of SAVAK in Khorasan was looking for Ayatollah Khamenei. He had asked the gendarmerie of Mashhad to send its agent for Sayyed Ali Khamenei on June 14 of the same year to ask him to surrender himself to SAVAK.
In 1966, “Future in the Realm of Islam” was not the only banned book on religion but rather, books such as “The Oath of the Faithful” written by Gholamreza Sa’idi, “The Philosophy of Fasting” by Mir Sayyed Ahmad Rozati, “Women and Freedom” by Sayyed Reza Sadr, “Andalus: The Land of Memories” by Sayyed Ali Mohaqqeq, “The Black Colonial Report Card” translated by Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, the books “The Child of Nile,” “The Future of Islam,” “World in the Danger of Collapsing, the Shi’ah and Arbitrary Rulers” were the writings and translations of Mostafa Zamani from books which were considered as harmful for people and were not supposed to be in the hands of people.
Investigations had started for finding Sayyed Khamenei. At first, SAVAK thought that he was in Mashhad but he pretended to escape to Tehran, hiding from the public.
In order to make it easier for the agents to recognize Sayyed Khamenei, the security forces gave two pictures of him to the gendarmerie and emphasized that his case is under investigation in a military court and that he should be arrested and be handed to SAVAK but the pictures didn’t help at all since they weren’t similar to Sayyed Khamenei; it was taken without the turban with a small beard and sunglasses.
The agents, after so much struggle, came to the conclusion that he has not been seen in Mashhad. One report said that he was in the village of Akhlamad. Meanwhile, they found out that his wife and child were in his brother in law’s house, Shaykh Ali Tehrani, in Mostashari Alley in Khosravi-ye No, Street and that their expenses are met by Sayyed Ali’s father; but he is not there.
